abstract Daily total water vapor (TWV) derived from radiances (five channels) measured by the microwave instrument AMSU-B on the polar-orbiting satellites NOAA-16 and 17. For TWV less then about 7 kg/m2, the retrieval works over any surface (land, open sea, sea ice). For TWV above about 7 kg/m2, the retrieval works over sea ice only, for TWV above 20 kg/m2, the retrieval fails over all surfaces. About 14 daily satellite passes, in the Arctic, each point is covered at least twice daily. All satellite passes of one day are interpolated and averaged onto a half-degree grid, using the "nearneighor" routine of the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) using four sectors and a searchradius of 60km.
