abstract The ARKXXIII/2 cruise of the German icebreaker Polarstern took place from 4 July to 10 August 2008 and was focused on oceanographic, biological, chemical and geophysical investigations in the northern Nordic Sea. The main work sites were Fram Strait between Svalbard and Greenland and the Northeast Water Polynya at the northeastern tip of Greenland. Hydrographic mesurements during the cruise included the standard section in the nothern Fram Strait along 78°50'N, which has been occupied regularly since 1997 (59 stations), 16 CTD stations in the HAUSAGRTEN area and 76 stations in the Northeast Water Polynya
